Abstract

Purpose - This study examined the relationship between public health expenditure and economic growth in Nigeria between 1988 and 2023.Design/methodology/approach - The study employed a time-series econometric approach using the ARDL model to examine the short-run and long-run relationships between public health expenditure and economic growth. Data were sourced from the World Bank and the Central Bank of Nigeria.Findings - The results showed that public health expenditure has a positive and statistically significant effect on economic growth in both the short run and the long run. Improved health outcomes, such as higher life expectancy and lower mortality rates, also positively influence economic performance. However, inefficiencies in health expenditure were identified, indicating the need for better resource allocation and governance.Originality/value – The study contributes to the literature by analysing the relationship between public health expenditure and economic growth in Nigeria using the ARDL approach, providing policy insights for sustainable economic development.
